Inventor Spotlight: Retractable Leash

The first retractable leash prototype was designed in 1972 out of the desire for PetParents to be able to give their dogs more freedom, while still remaining on leash. Today, we are doing an Inventor Spotlight with the inventor of the retractable leash & CEO of Flexi: Manfred Bogdahn.

Flexi makes one product, the retractable leash. This has allowed them to focus exclusively on creating the best and most functional retractable leash on the market. The design of the Flexi leash has come a long way since the original model was made out of wood.

The First flexi 1972

After all these years, Flexi is still a family run company. All of their leashes are crafted in one location near Hamburg, Germany by their group of nearly 300 dedicated employees. All of the Flexi leashes sold in the United States are distributed out of one warehouse in North Carolina. Flexi has been awarded several honors including being named a ‘Brand of the Century’ by “German Standards” and the ‘Editors Choice Award’ by “Dog Fancy Magazine.”

Flexi is upping the ante again with the introduction of their new Flexi Vario Leash. Already the winner of 8 different international awards, the Flexi Vario is highly customizable to the needs of any pet or pet parent. Several accessories can be switched out or added onto the leash in order to create a leash that is absolutely perfect for all of your pets needs.
