 1. Gateway Pet Guardians 

The Gateway Pet Guardians is a non-profit organization in St. Louis that brings hope and comfort to stray pets in Eastern St. Louis. They work to educate the community to eliminate homelessness of dogs and cats. As with most shelters, there are plenty of different ways you can get involved! Volunteer for hands on care of the animals, or take a hands-off approach and focus on fundraising and promoting adoptions. Another major way to get involved with Gateway Pet Guardians is to become a part of the feeding program. Do you live or work in the East St. Louis area? 2. The Humane Society of Missouri

The Humane Society of Missouri has been saving animals lives since 1870. They provide a safe home to animals in need- both large and small that may have been abandoned, or neglected. HSM has a goal of ending the cycle of animal abuse and pet overpopulation. The Missouri Humane Society currently accepts volunteers who are 18 and older, and can commit to a minimum of 6 months. There is a 1 hour orientation, and then volunteers work one-on-one with a mentor to train for their position within the shelter. With four separate shelter locations, and the animals in their care being both large and small, there are never too many hands to pitch in.

3. St. Louis Zoo

The opportunity to volunteer at your local zoo is a rare one indeed. St. Louis natives are lucky that the St. Louis zoo is one of the facilities that does allow for volunteer opportunities. Volunteers with a love for animals and a passion for their community are sought out to work with the Saint Louis Zoo. You don’t have to have prior experience in order to volunteer, you’ll be taught what you need for the volunteer position you secure. Volunteers should be at least 15 years old and willing to donate at least 30 hours of service over the year. A required training program (free of charge) is required prior to your first volunteer session. A variety of positions are available to cater to a wide variety of skills: docent, gift shop, education, insectarium, events, inter/externships, and even tour guides.

4. St. Louis Pet Rescue

Volunteering with the STL gives you the power to change the world, one pet at a time. There are numerous ways you can help! Take a dog to the vet, show them off at an adoption event, or become a foster parent! Walk dogs, bathe them, help them brush up on their manners. The list is literally endless. Volunteering so closely with rescue animals will give you such insight into these beautiful creatures, watch as they blossom and come out of their former shells.
