Volunteer opportunities are available year-round, and a minimum commitment of 6 months is required. Volunteers are asked to and able to do a variety of tasks to help around the shelter including:
- socializing animals
- help with adoptions
- feed the animals
- foster animals
- walk dogs

This is the official shelter of the city, and also the animal control office. Volunteers are mostly needed to care for the animals: cleaning, feeding, grooming, socializing, walking, and otherwise exercising the animals while they are in the care of the shelter. Volunteers also help with dishes, laundry, and office work- like putting together adoption packets. Potential volunteers are asked to fill out an application, after which they will be contacted for an interview and tour. You can print out an application here. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
The Alliance for Animals Boston (AFA) exists to promote animal protection and to raise the status of animals and their caretakers throughout the community. The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL Boston) is a non-profit animal care organization dedicated to rescuing domestic animals and wildlife from cruelty, suffering, abandonment, and neglect. Founded in 1899, the ARL has a longstanding history of doing good for animals in the Boston area. As with most shelters, if you cannot donate your time, a monetary donation is always accepted and greatly appreciated as well. The ARL Boston has three adoption centers, a Spay Waggin’ (mobile spay/neuter clinic), and administrative offices- all which need & accept the help of volunteers.
Contact email@example.com for additional information on volunteering with the ARL.
