2. City of Boston Animal Shelter

This is the official shelter of the city, and also the animal control office. Volunteers are mostly needed to care for the animals: cleaning, feeding, grooming, socializing, walking, and otherwise exercising the animals while they are in the care of the shelter. Volunteers also help with dishes, laundry, and office work- like putting together adoption packets. Potential volunteers are asked to fill out an application, after which they will be contacted for an interview and tour. You can print out an application here. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

3. Alliance for Animals

The Alliance for Animals Boston (AFA) exists to promote animal protection and to raise the status of animals and their caretakers throughout the community. The AFA fosters the animal-human bond, provides rescue, adoption, and veterinary services for the public- especially members of the inner-city Boston community, making an effort to reach out to the poor, elderly, disabled, and homeless pet owning community to offer care & assistance.

Volunteer positions needed:

  • kennel assistant- cleaning, animal care, dog walking, etc.
  • office assistant- files, computer skills, data entry
  • veterinary assistant
  • special projects- fundraising, event organization, etc.
  • writers, computer help, artists- misc. tasks (brochures, websites, educational materials, newsletter etc)

4. Animal Rescue League of Boston

The Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL Boston) is a non-profit animal care organization dedicated to rescuing domestic animals and wildlife from cruelty, suffering, abandonment, and neglect. Founded in 1899, the ARL has a longstanding history of doing good for animals in the Boston area. As with most shelters, if you cannot donate your time, a monetary donation is always accepted and greatly appreciated as well. The ARL Boston has three adoption centers, a Spay Waggin’ (mobile spay/neuter clinic), and administrative offices- all which need & accept the help of volunteers.
